I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to do something like this on circulars. Plus I don't think I have any circulars big enough; it's about 27 inches wide.
A circular with a long cable, and you don't really knit any differently than you do with straights. You still turn the work at the end of each row. You just have more room to 'store' the stitches, and you're much less likely to have the situation where you drop a needle and have to pick up a bunch of stitches. You can also wrap the tips into an overhand knot when you're not working, and your stitches are all perfectly secure. It's also much much easier to travel with circulars. It's easier to knit in a moving vehicle with them (which is important, for me, because we live hundreds of miles from anywhere) and you physically can't lose one half of a circular set under a car seat (done that with DPNs, very annoying). I've got some really super long cables for my interchangeable set; if you look at my post on my Aran, the stitches around my middle are all held on my longest cable with the ends capped.
