I totally want some love for my first fair isle!





Pattern is Flora, which is an excellent pattern that I screwed up in the following way: I did not Trust the Pattern. I looked at the cast on (120st) and the needle size (4.5mm) and thought "that is ridiculous, my head is 80st wide in DK on 3.75mm" and proceeded to cast on 90st on 3.5mm and do three pattern repeats. Oh, silly fair-isle virgin! The only other colourwork I've done is a little intarsia and noting anyone ever had to wear. So, anyway, the result is that the hat will be going to a small child of my acquaintance instead of on my own head, and I will soon be knitting myself a new one (with a 90st cast on increasing to 120st at the end of the brim.) But! I am still totally proud of this! It's really pretty and warm and gorgeous.

Me too! I'd really like to knit something William Morris-esque, but can't find much sadly. This is a pretty neat compromise, though.

I'm kind of frightened by patterns that involve more than one colour. I think I'll tackle that next year. This year, I'm popping my cabling and circular knitting cherries. :)

I've just started into colourwork myself - I've done a little striping (which was, for the record, really really easy and doesn't really count as colourwork IMO, so if you ever feel you need colour in your knitting go for that) and I just knitted a little intarsia R2D2 then this! I have to say that it's nowhere near as much of a pain in the ass as I thought it was going to be. This was super-easy because it's just two colours - and I have to say I found this, on balance, a lot easier than learning to cable. A LOT. :P

I hadn't realized that Fair Isle used so many more stitches, that's good to know!

I'm a little afraid of color work. I think I've mastered stripes. But intarsia and Fair Isle scare me.

This pattern, though, she is yummy and tendrilly and beautiful. So tempting, so pretty.

Yeah, I think it's because it's stranded behind, so it pulls your work inwards (it's also twice as thick, which is good for hats, of course!)

If you want to try fair isle I have to say I found this a really good pattern to start with - it's only two colours which makes it much less of a pain in the ass with twisting balls up, and fair isle has SO many fewer ends to weave in. I've done some intarsia and didn't find it especially difficult, just a giant giant pain with all the little ends. (It's still sitting around waiting to be turned into a cushion so I don't have to weave them all in!!! :P) *tempts, tempts*
