I improvised the pattern but what I did was so simple, it is almost embarrassing to admit. I knit a chin-length stockinette hat with double stranded wool. Then I washed the hat in a laundry machine, removing it every 10 minutes and tugging it into a shape I thought would be nice. A felted project will reduce about a third in size in the washing machine so it is important to make sure your project will be long enough.
